The impact of drug abuse in Nigeria tertiary institutions – case study of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri.
Abstract
This work deal with the impact of drug abuse in tertiary institution in Nigeria (a case study Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri). Drug abuse today is a major cause for concern and has a negative effect on society at large. Though students constitute a large segment of drug abusers, adults also succumb to drug abuse. There is a tendency amongst middle-aged people to abuse prescription drugs. In the methodology, descriptive research design was used. Primary and secondary sources of data were used through publications in which relevant information relating to the subjects of the study was contained. Data were presented in simple percentage table and were analyzed using frequency and simple percentage method. It was concluded that drug abuse is on the increase in tertiary institutions of learning in Nigeria and has seriously affected student’s life after school. It was recommended that there should also be an aggressive grassroots public campaign against drug abuse and quackery.
