Filing and indexing skills needed by secretaries (case study of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja).
Abstract
The study focused on basic filing and indexing skills needed by secretaries at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja. Descriptive research design was used in this project. The total population for the study comprised of one thousand two hundred and thirty-nine (1239) staff of the institution. fifty(50) were chosen as the sample. Questionnaires were administered to the staff of Kogi State Polytechnic. Also, recommendations that teaching secretarial students the theoretical aspect of this skill alone will not help them much. But let them be compelled to practicalise these skills and get used to the handling of this equipment which will be of great benefit to them and the organizations with which they will identify themselves. Among the equipment for the successful display of these skills are boxes, pigeon-holes, cupboards, shelves etc. Secretaries and filing clerks should be exposed to further training on the skills of filing and indexing. Organizations should encourage well-trained secretaries. Necessary filing equipment should be provided. Also, recommendations that secretaries should be encouraged to apply these skills in their office routine through the use of various kinds of incentives..
