Abstract

This project looks at Timeline assessment of the role of media in the Nigeria Civil War. This research work empirically explored timeline assessment of the roe of media in the Nigeria Civil War. The objectives of this study were to examine the factors responsible for the Nigeria Civil War, examine how the media affects the escalation of the conflict, examine how the media mitigate the conflict, identify the editorial stand point of newspapers on the Nigeria Civil War. Media framing and Frustration aggression theories were used as a framework. The research design used for this study is content analysis, four newspapers were used as sample size and Purposive sampling technique technique was applied. From the analysis of the data, the findings show that marginalization, political opponent and biased political appointment were some of the factors responsible for the Nigeria Civil War, false news and encouragement of the war by newspapers (media) escalate the war, newspaper (media) writing on restructuring, job creation and fair political appointment help mitigate the war. Following the findings, it was recommended that editorial stand point of newspaper (media) can help escalate war, thereby the media should be careful with their publications ensuring that it doesn’t escalate war, solutions provided by media should be taken into consideration by the government. The study therefore concludes that media can help in promoting peace, building consensus, and promoting the unity of Nigeria. Keywords: media, Nigeria Civil War, Nigeria. .
