Abstract
This project is on An assessment of the challenges and impact of drug abuse in tertiary institutions of learning – a study of Federal Polytechnic Bida. This research is a study of drug abuse among students of higher learning a case study of Federal Polytechnic Bida. The major research question includes to what extent do students of higher learning indulge in drug abuse, what is the influence of drug abuse on the academic performance in tertiary institutions, the measure to be taken in rectifying the problems? Questionnaire was administered for the collection of the data and other sources were also used. The research finding reveals that drug abuse affects the academic performance of students in Federal Polytechnic Bida. It also distracts the student from attending classes, which also affect the mental state of mind of students. Moreover, most of the students involved in this habit of drug abuse are only aware of the concept but not its medical or social implications. It is recommended that much attention be given to the students, continuous counseling and orientation.
