Awareness of self-medication and its associated dangers among students nurses in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi.
Abstract
Self-medication is the use of medicine for the treatment of oneself of any ailment without a physician’s prescription. The purpose of this study was to determine the awareness of self-medication and its associated dangers among nurses in NAUTH, Nnewi. The findings of this study will reawaken the knowledge of student nurses towards self-medication and its associated dangers and also join in the campaign against self-medication by educating their friends, family and community on the dangers of self-medication. Sample size of 166 respondents were used for the study using descriptive research design and a close structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. From the findings, 100% of the student nurses have heard of self-medication and 100% engaged in it, 21% used anti-malaria, 93% of the students agreed that self-medication can result in danger and 24%, said that the danger was addiction. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that student nurses in the School of Nursing NAUTH, Nnnewi were aware. Hence, the researcher implores that awareness and education to the general public regarding the dangers of self-medication should be created. Recommendations were made among which are: health education and interventions aimed at changing the perception of the student nurses regarding the accessibility and affordability of health care facilities.
