Description

Assessment of health implication of female genital mutilation in Illela local government Sokoto state.

Abstract

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply rooted cultural practice with severe physical and psychological consequences for women. This study focuses on assessing the health implications of FGM in Illela Local Government Area, Sokoto State, Nigeria. Despite extensive campaigns and legal interventions aimed at eradicating FGM, it continues to persist in this region. This research seeks to understand the major reasons for FGM, the implications it has on women”s health, and the underlying factors contributing to its persistence. The study uses a quantitative approach and employs questionnaires as the primary data collection method. Data analysis is conducted using SPSS software, and frequency tables are presented. The research”s scope is limited to Illela Local Government Area, and a small sample size due to resource constraints. The study”s objectives are to determine the major reasons for FGM in Illela, examine the health implications of FGM, and understand the reasons behind its continuation. The research findings are expected to provide valuable insights for policymakers, government agencies, and organizations working to eliminate FGM. Additionally, this study will raise awareness among parents about the dangers of FGM, and it will serve as a reference for future research on the topic. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform policies and interventions aimed at prohibiting or eliminating the practice of FGM in Illela and similar regions. It also contributes to the existing body of literature on the physical and psychological consequences of FGM, as well as its violation of human rights, including the right to health, security, and physical integrity. Despite the study’s limitations, such as a small sample size and time constraints, it offers valuable insights into the health implications of FGM in Illela Local Government Area.
