Description
Abstract
The effect of aqueous leaf extract of Spondias mombin on serum lipid profile of rabbit was studied. Nine female rabbits, randomly distributed into 3 groups of three (3) rabbits each, were orally administered with the extract once daily for 10days. Group 1 was administered with 1ml of distilled water which serves as control, while the remaining 11 and 111 were administered with the extract at 150mg/kg and 200mg/kg per body weight respectively. The serum total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), triacylglycerols (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) level were determined from blood samples collected on the intervals of 0,24,48,72, and 96 hours. The result showed that the extract administration significantly (P0.05) reduced total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triacylglycerols (TG) concentrations. The administration on the other hand, did not significantly reduce serum high density lipoprotein. These findings may be of great clinical importance as a remedy in folk medicine, for disease associated with lipid metabolism.
