Godfatherism and political participation of youths in Kogi state.
Abstract
This research work was conducted to examine godfatherism and political participation of youths in Kogi State. It informed the public officers on the understanding of youths regarding godfatherism in youth political participation. Among the objectives was to analyze godfatherism syndrome in Nigerian politics and its implication for development in the survival of Nigerian democracy and to investigate the significant difference between godfatherism and political participation of youths in Kogi state politics. Furthermore, to identify the relationship between godfatherism and the political participation of youths in Kogi state and highlight constraints and challenges of godfatherism in the political participation of youth in Kogi state, Nigerian politics. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research use descriptive survey to sample youths in the study area. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 399 questionnaires were distributed out of which 300 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that there should be education and awareness aimed at young people to help them understand the importance of political participation and civic responsibility, and the governments and political parties should adopt policies that prioritize the concerns and interests of youths to encourage their participation in politics outside godfatherism, while, the political parties should ensure that youths are well-represented in decision-making positions within the party, government, and civil society organizations.
