Abstract
This project is on Influence of parental disciplinary styles on students truant behaviour in senior secondary schools in Kano state, The general purpose of this study was aimed at investigating the influence of parental disciplinary styles on students truant behavior in Senior Secondary Schools in Kano State. In the study 4 objectives, 4 research questions and 4 null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Review of related literature and empirical study was stated in line to the study. The design adopted was survey design. Total population was 62,346 comprised class SSII Senior Secondary Schools and their parents. Random and purposive sampling technique was used to select sample from the target population. structured questionnaire was developed for data collection. The bio-data information of the respondents was analysed by the use of simple percentage. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Statistical test was used to ascertain relationship between the variables at 0.05 level of significance in null hypothesis 1,2 and 3. ANOVA statistical test was used to determine the difference among the variables at 0.05 level of significance in null hypothesis 4. Findings revealed that parent?s use of authoritarian and permissive disciplinary styles influence students? truant behaviour with mean attendance (2.602.5) for absent in school and (2.392.5) absent in school. Also the two hypotheses were not retained with calculated value greater than the table value (.253 .195) and (.511 .195) respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that, use of parental authoritarian and permissive disciplinary styles tend to motivate negative behaviour and the use of democratic disciplinary style tend to motivate positive behaviour. Researcher recommended among others that, parents should draw their adolescents more closer to them, by the adoption of democratic disciplinary style so that, they can understand and handle their problems.
