Abstract
This project looks at Influence of violent television contents on adolescent social behaviour a study of Edo college, Benin city. In this study, an attempt was made to establish the relationship between violent television content viewing and social behavior/habit formation of adolescent people with reference to students of Edo College in Benin metropolis. Specifically, the study sought to evaluate the television viewing habits of secondary school students identify the level of exposure to the specific television channels and programs viewed by students of the selected schools and determine the influence of television programmes on the habits of the students in secondary schools. Samples of 240 students were selected and the data gathered for this study was generated from the distribution of copies of questionnaires to the students of Edo College, Benin City. From this study, it was concluded that secondary school students are much familiar with the television set. Society seems to be less concerned about students’ exposure to the television set. This is because society encourages the use of the television set without considering its negative influence on young people. Society seems to be quite ignorant about the harmful behavior that can be caused by electronic media to students. The implications of this study establish that there is a relationship between television viewing and negative social behavior among adolescents.
