Description
ABSTRACT
The study assessed the Information and Communication Skills and competencies expected of NCE secretarial education graduates by employers of labour to update the NCE secretarial education curriculum. Specifically it was intended to determine the computer operation competencies, networking competencies, media communication competencies, voice recognition competencies and video conferencing competencies that are necessary for NCE secretarial education graduates as to update the NCE secretarial education curriculum. The population consisted of 226 male and female employers in both public and private sectors. A total of 205 questionnaire copies were retrieved from the respondents. The data collected from the respondents were analyzed using the arithmetic mean statistic to answer the five research questions. The standard deviation of each item from the mean was determined in the analysis. The hypotheses were tested using ztest at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that ICT competencies in computer operation competency, media communication competency, and video conferencing competency are needed to update the NCE secretarial education curriculum; that employers require some aspects of networking and voice recognition competencies; that employers in public sector organizations require more of these competencies than employers from the private sector organizations. Consequent upon these findings, this recommendation was among others; that the NCCE should revise its curriculum to give a wider coverage of ICT courses to encompass practical competencies and skills.
