ABSTRACT
Football is the most popular sporting event in the world The increase in the popularity of the game and the expectations from players make injury risk in football high This study specifically described the injury patterns among professional footballers during the 2011/2012 Nigerian Premier League NPL Two hundred and forty footballers from 11 clubs that participated in the 2011/2012 NPL premiership season were selected through proportionate stratified random sampling technique and were prospectively studied for 6 months The Union of European Football Association UEFA Injury Report Forms were used for data collection Descriptive statistics of mean, percentages, and frequency distributions were used to answer the research questions, while chi-square X2 was used to test the hypotheses at 005 alpha level The mean age, height and weight of the injured footballers were 2294338 years, 169005 meters and 7129389kg respectively The study found a high injury prevalence 779 which was associated with actual league games Sprain 321 was the predominant type of injury recorded Most of the injuries 631 led to 13 days of players absence from football activities Tackling/being tackled 337 was the predominant mechanism of injury recorded while 361 of the injuries were re-injuries
Types of injury were significantly associated to the footballers roles/positions of play X2 66248, p 0004 and types of training/match X2 174762, p 0000 respectively No significant association however exists among severity of injuries; mechanisms of injury; incidences of re-injury and types of surface at injury Mechanisms of injury and incidences of re-injure were also not significantly associated to types of training/match and footballers BMI This study has highlighted the need for the league organizers to continually emphasize the principle of fair play among NPL players prior to the commencement of league games Team education on injury preventive measures should be ongoing
