Abstract
This project looks into Local government and challenges of rural development in Nigeria. Using Okigwe local government is of Imo state as a case study. As contained in the local government amendment decree of 1994, the system seeks to achieve these objectives through the principle of democratic participation at the grass root level. This implies that policy is aimed at and programs of the local government areas. However, the analysis of this study indicates that the system the manifestation of this impediment of local government system has been characterized by lack of autonomy inadequate finance and the absence of accountability and probably other range forms.
