Abstract

This work access money politics and vote buying in Nigeria: The bane of good governance using 2019 governorship election of Kogi State. The major objective of this project is to examine factors responsible for money politics, vote buying and selling in Kogi State, to assess the impact of money politics and vote buying on the electoral system and people’s choice of political office holder, to examine the implications of vote buying on Nigeria democracy and National Security and to provide the strategies for tackling the menace of vote buying in Nigeria. The methodology adopted in gathering data was descriptive method, both the primary and secondary methods. The major instrument used to gather data from primary source is the questionnaire. From a population of 4,473,500, a sample size of 400 respondents was selected using simple random technique. Findings revealed that money politics and vote buying are a bane of good governance, and are affecting the socio-economic stability of the state and the country negatively. In view of the findings, it was recommended that political parties should abstain from projecting the financial reputation of wealthy candidates and their financial quality to the parties. More transparent and effective screening methods must be developed by the political parties and the electoral body, to ensure the exclusion of credible candidates and politicians who are not corrupt with the electoral process and the electorate.
