Abstract
This project is on Peer group influence on the academic achievement of public senior secondary school students. This research work empirically explored peer group influence on the academic achievement of public senior secondary school students. The objectives of this study were to establish the relationship between peer group and students’ performance in public senior secondary school, examine the extent of the influence of peer group on student school life and attitude towards studies in public senior secondary school. Weidman’s model of socialization in learning institutions was used as a framework. The research design used for this study is survey, the population targeted for this study consists of student and staff of some public senior secondary school, a total of 300 students and staff was used as sample size, 300 questionnaires administered to students and staffs and cluster sampling technique was applied. Instrument used for this study is the questionnaire. Data collected were collected from primary sources. From the analysis of the data, the findings revealed that peer groups influence the performance of students in their academic works as students are fond of participating and expressing views among their peers easily, peer groups help improve student grades especially through group works. Following the findings, it was recommended that student should move with peers that will affect them positively, parent and teachers should be on watch on the king of peers the student associate themselves with also, teachers should encourage group work and ensure that each student participate effectively The study reliably concludes that student should be allowed to participate in group works and associate with their peers that will affect them positively.
