Abstract
Hand washing is the process of washing hands and their accessory structures under running tap water using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap not less than 15– 20 seconds. This study was done to assess perceived factors that affect hand washing practice among student nurses in the College of Nursing, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. The objectives are to assess the knowledge of hand washing among student nurses in College of Nursing, NAUTH Nnewi in Anambra State to determine the extent of the practice of hand washing among student nurses to identify factors that affect the practice of hand washing among the group. Relevant literatures were reviewed. A non-experimental descriptive survey design was adopted and no sampling technique was used. Data were collected using questionnaires and were analyzed and presented using frequency distribution tables with percentages, pie and bar charts. Findings from this study showed that all of the respondents 100% were knowledgeable about hand washing but a greater percentage 48.9% did not practice it because of their tight schedule in the wards. It is therefore recommended that students should be encouraged to practice hand washing and provided with resources that will promote their practice of hand washing and its importance in health care should be mentioned. The institutions should also set up a hand-washing committee that will fully monitor the practice of hand-washing by student nurses in the discharge of their duties.
