Description

Perceived benefits of exercise among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, Anambra state.

Abstract

Background: Exercise during pregnancy provides many benefits for both the mother and baby. However, rates of exercise tend to decline during pregnancy. This study aimed to evaluate the perceived benefits of and barriers to exercise among pregnant women attending antenatal care.   Methods: A descriptive survey design was used. The study population included 102 pregnant women selected through convenience sampling from the antenatal clinic at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics.   Results: Most women (100%) perceived benefits of exercise during pregnancy including preventing excessive weight gain (93%), improving health (67%), decreasing need for cesarean delivery (34%), and reducing anxiety/depression (56%). Benefits to the baby included optimal birth weight (92%) and lower risk of prolonged gestation (53%). However, barriers such as pregnancy symptoms (39.2%) and already feeling active enough (18.6%) hindered exercise. Factors promoting exercise were believing exercise is beneficial (76.5%) and encouragement from others (31.4%). Strategies to improve exercise rates focused on education through counseling (66.7%) and guidance from healthcare providers (65.7%).   Conclusion: Pregnant women understand the broad benefits of exercise but still face significant barriers. More education, support, and structured programs may help more women exercise during pregnancy. Key strategies include counseling and clear guidance on proper exercise from care providers..
