According to spelling experts, it is very important that the learners of a second language should be equipped with the basic words to be able to communicate effectively in that language. It has been established that really students commit spelling errors for various reasons ranging from their own carelessness to inappropriate teaching methodology and environmental factors. 200 staff of selected secondary schools in Ikeja Lagos state was selected randomly by the researcher as the population of the study. Due to the large size of the target population, the researcher used the Taro Yamani formula to arrive at the sample population of the study. This research work has therefore looked into the crucial issue of spelling errors. Through the teachers’ answers to the questions and the students’ performance in the test administered, it has been established that the problem of spelling errors actually exists among Nigerian secondary school students. It is therefore recommended that the teaching of spelling, especially at the secondary school level should be made a major aspect of the English language curriculum and there should be a concerted effort at teaching it on weekly basis.
