Abstract

This research work was designed to study the effect of communication on the attitudes of mothers towards childhood killer diseases and national programme on immunization. In developing countries, newborn babies will on average live two years less than those born in developed countries. Life expectancy is still eight to nine years less than children born in developed countries. In addition, children born in developing countries are more likely to suffer from vaccine-preventable diseases. The main objectives of this research work are to assess the efforts of government in the eradication of child killer diseases and to examine the effect of the national programme on immunization on the children. The method used in collecting data was mainly primary and secondary techniques. The population size comprised of eight hundred (800) mothers in Dekina local government of Kogi State. The sample for this study consisted of Two Hundred (200) respondents who are mothers selected from five health districts out of nine in Dekina local government area. A stratified sampling technique was used to choose five (5) health districts out of nine (9) in the local government for the research work. Based on the data presented and analyzed, it was discovered that there are significant differences in mother participation in the National Programme on Immunization in Dekina local government area of Kogi state. The following recommendations are made by the researcher: there should be continuous public education and enlightenment campaign targeted mostly on mothers to increase their awareness on childhood killer diseases in the community and ways of contracting those deadly diseases by health workers and other voluntary workers including the traditional birth attendant (TBA).
