Description

Assessment of weight gain between indigenous and exotic breeds of broilers.

Abstract

The research Assessment of weight gain between indigenous and exotic breeds of broilers. Poultry farming involves, domesticating birds such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese. They are raised primarily for meat production. The Nigerian indigenous chicken is one of the major sources of protein. The study is aimed to assess the weight gain of the indigenous and exotic breeds of poultry birds. The objective is to compare the difference in weight gain of indigenous and exotic breeds of poultry based on the source of feeds. The data were considered normally distributed. This assumption was not verified, but to moderate violation and because this is a preliminary study, it was considered suitable. Thus, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was performed for statistical analysis, aiming to identify homogeneous groups, according to the percentage of weight gain per hour of fasting (pw). The experimental data were collected in eight poultry houses. The statistical analysis identified three homogeneous groups, with respectively linear weight gain of 0.26%, 0.52% and 0.75%. The logistic sectors can use these results as an indicator of stress and bird’s energy expenditure.
