Awareness and perceived benefits of premarital genotype screening in preventing sickle cell disease among nursing student in college of health science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi campus.

Abstract

Premarital genotype screening presents an opportunity for individuals to become informed about their genetic predisposition to diseases and for couples to be aware of the possible genetic characteristics of their unborn children. Hence, if one holds the view that one of the reasons for marriage is procreation, then worrying about genetic compatibility and avoiding genetic inheritance of grave consequences becomes something to strongly consider. This study was carried out to assess the Awareness and perceived benefits of Premarital genotype screening in preventing sickle cell disease among Nnamdi Azikiwe University Students, Nnewi Campus. A descriptive cross-sectional survey research design was used for this research. The sample size of 200 respondents was selected using Yamane Taro’s formula of simple random sampling technique. Data Collected was analyzed using a frequency table. It was discovered from the 200 structured questionnaires that in the demographic table above the bulk of the respondents (65.0%)are in the age range of 23-30, (42.0%) are male while (75.0%) are female, the greater portion of respondents (30.5%) are in 300level. In the aspect of awareness of the genetic disease (78.0%) are Yes while (22.0%) are No, this level of knowledge was above knowledge. Majority of their respondents 102 (52%) indicated that there are limited health education programs to promote awareness of premarital genotype screening and 81(40.50%)indicated a lack of information. It is therefore recommended that more knowledge on the importance of pre-marital genotype screening and its benefits should be made available to everyone and the government and the health sector should make plans to orientate individuals and the communities.
