Abstract

This work focused on the impact of social media on the academic performance of Students in tertiary institutions using Kogi State University, Anyigba as the case study. The objectives of this study are to assess the positive and negative impact of social media on students’ performance. The methodology adopted in gathering data was descriptive method, both the primary and secondary methods. The major instrument used to gather data from primary sources was the questionnaire. From a population of 200, a sample size of 150 respondents was selected using simple random technique. Findings revealed that students have access to social media, which serves as a platform for discussion for their assignments. It was also revealed that among the negative impact of social media on student’s academic performance is poor grades in schools.  In view of the findings, it was recommended that Teachers/ lecturers adopt new strategies by channeling assignments or discussions on social media platforms to help inculcate the habit of using these sites for academic work. Students must minimize the time they spend on social media to avoid being obsessed with these sites for unnecessary chatting. The institutions’ authorities should also restrict access to certain social media sites that may be prone to distracting students’ attention during school hours as a means of minimizing their use.
