Description
Survey on biological and chemical insect pest control methods in crop production.
Abstract
The research was conducted in five (5) villages namely, Gozaki Dantutture, Dutsen Kura, Kanya and Sabuwar Kasa in Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State. The project work aimed to identify the various control methods especially biological and chemical and enlighten the farmers on how the pests are controlled to minimize damage caused by them to agricultural production which lead to loss to the farmers. The data was collected through questionnaires, field visits and oral interviews with farmers in the study areas. The data obtained were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, that is by taking the frequency and percentage of the data collected (simply by dividing the actual outcomes over total outcomes and multiplying by hundred 100). The major findings are that the farmers suffer from aphids (50%) and beetles 37.50% attacks on their farms. This, however, is being controlled by the use of chemical methods as indicated by table 10 where 67.50% and 15% of the respondents use chemical and biological methods to control them. The techniques involved in the biological control is by use of predators as indicated by the 50% response shown in table 13.
