Abstract
The study of the role of banking sector in the development of SMEs in Nigeria, a study of Sterling Bank Plc, was carried out to ascertain the contribution of the banking sector to the growth and development in Nigeria and to give insight on the strength and weakness of the sector as well as the government and the citizens at large to the development of the SMEs in Nigeria. The study did not forget to proffer solutions as to good management and accessibility of facilities to enable the speed development and enabling environment and tax release on the sector. From the data collected, analytical statistic tool was used, percentage been the measuring weight, it was discovered that the sector has tendencies of growth and development if the enabling institutions are functional with no political interference and mismanagement.
