Abstract
This project focuses on analysis of the Guardian and the Vanguard newspapers representation of sickle cell disease in Nigeria. This study was carried out to know the coverage given to sickle cell disease news as well as their patterns of coverage. To this end, the content analysis was conducted using two Nigerian newspapers – The Guardian and the Vanguard newspapers. The study content analyzed two newspapers for the coverage of sickle cell disease issues in Nigeria between the period of the year 2015 and June 19th, 2016 excluding the month of May 2015. The following content categorizations– language, prominence, issues, direction were used for this study. Prominence was measured through the importance attached to the reports by analyzing the page the story was published; front page, back page and inside page of the coverage. The sources of the reports were also measured by analyzing key sources of the story. The units of analysis were the theme of stories (straight news, feature, editorials, science and health). Therefore, a systematic sampling procedure was used in this study to select the 688 editions used as the sample size for the population. The findings of this study show that Nigerian newspapers do not pay adequate attention to sickle cell disease news and that the little sickle cell disease news published was not given prominence. It also found out that there is no awareness of this disease Furthermore, the newspapers did not do much to educate, enlighten the public on this disease. It is therefore recommended that the newspaper houses should strive to cover more of sickle cell disease news as compared to their coverage of other diseases news.
