Design and implementation of a Network intrusion detection system

Description

Abstract As the world is combating the wave of cyber-attacks that have disrupted businesses on a massive scale and make them run on massive losses, cyber security experts are called upon to look into the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) network and access the vulnerability of the network via vulnerability testing. As an aspirant of cyber security, I propose the development of a Network Intrusion Detection (IDS) system for the improvement of the network. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is software that monitors the network or the system’s activities for any malicious or unwanted operation. Tremendous growth of and usage of the internet raises concerns about how to protect and communicate digital information in a safe manner. Nowadays, hackers use different types of attacks for getting valuable information. Many intrusion detection techniques, methods and algorithms help to detect these attacks. The main purpose of this project is to provide a complete study about the definition of intrusion detection, history, life cycle, types of intrusion detection methods, types of attacks, different tools and techniques, research needs, challenges and applications.
